One of the biggest complaints from users since Microsoft launched Windows 10 in 2015 is the little, or no, privacy that this operating system offers us. Microsoft introduced in its new operating system (and even in previous versions, such as Windows 7 and Windows 8.1) a series of functions with which to collect data from users and send them to the company’s servers for analytical purposes. Although in the latest updates of Windows has reduced the amount of data that is collected when using the operating system, for most it is still not enough, and therefore applications, such as WindowsSpyBlocker, have a great popularity.
WindowsSpyBlocker is a simple free and open source application, written in Go, designed to add to our operating system a series of rules and instructions through which you can block all traffic that the operating system sends to Microsoft servers.
Unlike other applications that block the telemetry usually modify or delete essential Windows files, it bases its operation on adding a series of rules to the Windows firewall itself so that, without altering Windows files, it may be able to block all this telemetry.
How to block espionage and telemetry with WindowsSpyBlocker
The first thing we must do to be able to use this tool is to download the latest version from the following link . The application is portable, does not need any installation on the computer, and will only occupy a few megabytes on our hard drive.
Once downloaded, we simply run the .exe file that we downloaded from GitHub and we can see the main window of this tool, a window based on CMD.
This tool has two types of operation; the first, the most basic, which is based on creating a series of rules to block all Windows telemetry and data collection, and the second of them, the developer mode, which will allow us to install a series of tools to Capture and analyze traffic to collaborate in the improvement of this tool.
If we choose the option “1” , the program will automatically start creating all the rules of its database in the firewall of our Windows. This process will take a few seconds and we will be able to see in detail all the addresses that the application blocks.
WindowsSpyBlocker – Creating rules
When finished, these Windows firewall rules will start working and, from then on, all telemetry or data collection connections will be blocked in our operating system automatically, without having to do anything else.
Dangers of using WindowsSpyBlocker
As we can see, WindowsSpyBlocker is one of the less aggressive applications when blocking the telemetry of our Windows 10, 8.1 or Windows 7, although we can not promise that it is good for the operating system either.
Although this tool does not modify or delete essential Windows files, it blocks connections that, at times, may be necessary for the correct functioning of some Windows functions, functions that can make Windows Update , for example, unable to update our operating system with the security patches.
We also remember that the blocking of telemetry is one of the main reasons why Windows 10 feature updates often fail, so there is a very high probability that, with Windows 10 May 2019 Update just around the corner, blocking telemetry does us more harm than good.
